The College Football Playoff debate is going to be an active one over the next couple of weeks.
After Week 14 ended, there were even more questions to be answered about who should be in the new 12-team field.
With conference title games taking place on December 6 and 7, some teams are watching from home holding their breath on the playoff status.
One of those teams is the Ole MissRebels, who have had three losses in the year and are in an interesting spot.
On Sunday, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin was active on X tagging the College Football Playoff account to suggest that Ole Miss’ resume is worthy of a spot.
Later on Sunday night, Illinois head coach Bret Bielema took to X and responded to Kiffin’s tweet. However, Bielema was making his case for his Illinois team while appearing to tease Kiffin.
“I couldn’t agree more @Lane_Kiffin here is a thought for the @CFBPlayoff. Ole miss #31 strength of schedule and has 3 losses to unranked Kentucky, Florida and 8-4 LSU team #IllinoisHAS #30 strength of schedule and has 3 losses to #1 Oregon and #4 Penn State and a one possession game to Minnesota How about we just take the best 12 teams and see where it goes….” Bielema wrote on X.
Bielema put Ole Miss and Illinois’ resumes side-by-side in terms of strength and schedule and regarding the losses.
Illinois also has three losses, which came against Penn State, Minnesota and Oregon (by 29 points).
Ole Miss has three losses, which came against Kentucky, LSU, and Florida. On the other hand, Ole Miss has wins over Georgia and South Carolina while Illinois has zero wins against current top 25 teams.
Still, Bielema’s response sparked plenty of reactions on X with fans saying he “cooked and “bodied” Lane Kiffin.
“BRET JUST BODIED THE SEC AND LANE KIFFIN,” one fan wrote.
“Can’t believe I’m saying this, but Bret Bielema cooked here,” wrote another.
“Bret from the top rope!” another wrote on X.
While Bielema has some valid points, Illinois’ case is a tough one considering the best wins came against Michigan, Rutgers, and Nebraska.
All in all, Tuesday’s updated College Football Playoff rankings should serve as a strong indication for Ole Miss regarding a potential spot in the field.
