Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman updated the health status of starting quarterback Taylen Green and running back Ja’Quinden Jackson during his weekly SEC Teleconference on Wednesday.
The forecast for both Green and Jackson ahead of next Saturday’s game against the No. 5 Texas Longhorns at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium didn’t sound overwhelmingly positive from Pittman.
“I still think we’re a few days away from both those guys determining what their availability to play against Texas would be,” Pittman said. “I can tell you this, I don’t know if either one of them will be able to play if we were playing Saturday. So, I think we still have to wait until Monday of next week to see exactly where we’re at with those two guys.”
In Arkansas’ 63-31 blowout loss to Ole Miss over the weekend, Green suffered a right leg injury in the first half and never looked steady afterward. After Green finished out the first two quarters, backup Malachi Singleton replaced Green for the entire second half.
According to Pittman, Green is dealing with a sprained knee and may not be available to practice today despite going through walk-throughs yesterday.
This isn’t the first bruising Green has taken this season, as he left the Tennessee game Oct. 5 early in the fourth quarter due to a left knee injury. Through nine games this season, Green has totaled 2,214 passing yards, 11 passing touchdowns, seven interceptions, 411 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.
Jackson has missed two consecutive games for Arkansas while recovering from nagging injuries. Against LSU on Oct. 19, Jackson reaggravated an ankle injury that forced him to exit the game early versus the Tigers.
After starting the year on an electric pace (three straight 100+ yard games), Jackson has cooled off but still sits at fifth in the SEC in rushing yards (592) and he also has 10 scores on the ground. Pittman confirmed that Jackson is still recovering from an ankle injury and that he is uncertain to practice today.
Arkansas will rest up during the bye week before welcoming Texas to Fayetteville on Nov. 16. That game will kick off at 11 a.m. CT and will be broadcast on ABC.

HAWGBEAT’S PICK
Each week, HawgBeat will list a few picks that look favorable based on trends and statistics throughout the season.
Boogie Fland OVER 16.5 points scored and OVER 2.5 three pointers made (+250)
In his collegiate debut against Lipscomb, freshman guard Boogie Fland wasn’t shy about letting the ball fly.
His 18 field goal attempts was a game-high (next highest was 12, Johnell Davis), and Fland made eight of those shots for 17 points. If head coach John Calipari continues letting Fland have that bright of a green light, he should have opportunities to get over 16.5 points Saturday.
Where Fland needs to improve is from distance, as he finished 1-of-8 from beyond the arc against the Bisons. I will go out on a limb and say that’s more of an anomaly than a trend, and I think Fland will bounce back with the bright lights on.
Big-time players make big-time plays when it matters most, and I think that’ll be the case for Fland against the Bears.
Arkansas football’s collapse in Saturday’s home blowout loss to Ole Miss may be the start of a striking trend for Travis Williams’ defensive unit.
Last season, Williams’ first as a member of Arkansas’ coaching staff, the Hogs got off to a relative rip-roaring start against opposing offenses. It held teams like Ole Miss (27), Alabama (24) and Mississippi State (7) to low point totals and kept the team in games more often than not.
But then, the final four games happened. After an Oct. 28 bye week, Williams’ squad surrendered 36 points (at Florida), 48 points (vs. Auburn), 20 points (vs. FIU) and 48 points (at Missouri). Those teams averaged 405.5 total yards against Arkansas’ defense.
Fast forward to the present, and the beginning of a startling parallel has potentially emerged. So far, Arkansas has kept teams like Auburn (14), Texas A&M (21) and Tennessee (14) at bay point-wise. To start a four-game close to the regular season against the Rebels, however, the Razorbacks were completely dismantled to the tune of 63 points and 694 yards allowed.
Is that a sign that Arkansas’ defense is about to let go of the rope similar to last season? For head coach Sam Pittman’s sake, the Hogs better hope it’s a coincidence and not a trend.
“Well, I mean each team is different,” Pittman said after the Ole Miss game. “I know what you’re talking about in that we’ve played really well and then we haven’t. I understand the question and I think it’s a fair question. But teams are different.”
Fortunately for Arkansas, it has one final bye this week to fix some of its mishaps, whether that’s possibly tipping plays to offenses or failures in the secondary. Unfortunately for Arkansas, it has a daunting matchup against No. 5 Texas and its No. 16 total offense coming up Nov. 16.
That isn’t exactly a recipe for success, and star Arkansas pass-rusher Landon Jackson knows the Hogs have to figure things out to avoid another end-of-season defensive disaster.
“We’ve got a whole new team this year, so really try not to look back on last year and compare it,” Jackson said after the Ole Miss game. “I mean, we definitely have to have a reality check as a team and really just come down to earth and figure out what we need to get better at and get better at it. And yeah, I mean, just can’t let it happen again.
“Got to learn from our mistakes, and overall get better as a defense because past few games, we’ve allowed too many points. Even Mississippi State game, offense saved us because we still allowed almost 30 points. So really, just figure it out and overall just start playing better ball.”
Up next, Arkansas will welcome the Texas Longhorns to Razorback Stadium next Saturday. That game will kick off at 11 a.m. CT and will be broadcast on ABC.
No. 8 Baylor might have lost by 38 points in its season-opener, but there’s no doubt that the Bears will be ready when they take on the No. 16 Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday at American Airlines Center in Dallas.
It is worth pointing out that the team on the other end of that blowout loss for Baylor was the No. 6 Gonzaga Bulldogs, who shot 57.1% from the field as a team, totaled 25 assists and out-rebounded the Bears, 45-32.
As for the Razorbacks, they earned a 76-60 win over what will end up being a good Lipscomb team at the mid-major level. The Hogs saw a 15-point lead dwindle down to just four with under eight minutes to play in the game, and they then proceeded to go on a 16-4 run to end the contest.
It’s safe to say that neither team performed how they wanted to in their respective openers, but only one got the result they wanted. It’ll be a lot tougher for Arkansas to be on the winning side next time out, as the Bears will be extremely hungry to play much better.
“We know they’re a better team than that,” Arkansas guard Johnell Davis said Wednesday. “We know they’re going to come out trying to fight so we gotta stay on our toes.”
Baylor was 24-11 overall last season and the Bears lost to Clemson in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. That marked Baylor’s third straight second round exit following their national championship season in 2020-21 that featured an Elite Eight win over Arkansas.
