The difference between a prepaid card and a normal debit card is that your prepaid card isn’t linked with a traditional bank account or credit union account like a normal debit card.

Prepaid cards are used as alternatives to cash. It is a very safe way to carry money, it can do everything a normal debit card would, e.g purchasing things online, withdrawing from an ATM, etc.

In most cases people don’t usually know the difference between a prepaid card and a regular debit card.

What is Venmo?

Venmo, owned by PayPal, is one of the biggest and most popular platform for transferring of money. It is a very easy and convenient way to send and receive money.

You can send and request for payments from family and friends using the payment platform, as long as they use Venmo too. They ( Venmo) also have an app that works on Android and iOS smartphones.

This platform can also be used as a middleman between a person and his bank. Because with Venmo you can transfer money from one bank account to another. All you have to do is to follow the steps on the app.

Can you use a prepaid card on Venmo?

Yes, people can link their Venmo to multiple cards (debit and credit) including a prepaid debit card. But not all prepaid cards work with Venmo.

How do you know if your prepaid card works with Venmo?

For your prepaid card to work on Venmo, it needs to have a network brand. Venmo would only accept your prepaid card if its network brand is MasterCard, American Express, Discover or Visa.

If your prepaid card doesn’t belong to any of network brands listed above, then it won’t work on Venmo

But luckily almost all the prepaid debit cards people use in the US are usually issued by the network brand I’ve mentioned above, so your prepaid card is most likely going to belong to one of them.

How to add a prepaid card to Venmo

It is essential that we know how to link our prepaid card to Venmo. Keep reading as I walk you through the step by step procedures of linking your prepaid card to Venmo. To link your prepaid card to Venmo, firstly;

  • Open the app, once you open the app you have to log in (as I presume you already have an account) using your login details.
  • Once you’ve successfully logged in, on your home screen, tap “ settings”, then click on “ preferences” in the settings menu, and tap on “ payment methods” You will see a list of the payment methods you’ve already added to the account.
  • At the end of the payment methods page, you will see “ add bank or card “, click on it and choose the “card” option.
  • Once the page opens, fill in the relevant fields with your prepaid card information, cross check to make sure the information you filled are correct.
  • You can also take a picture of the card and let the app fill in the information by itself. All you need to do is to click on the camera icon beside the card data field and take a picture of your card.
  • Enter the zip code of the card, if it doesn’t have one you can just enter you zip code.
  • Tap “add”, to add the card to your Venmo account.
